50/50 Friday - Favorite/Least Favorite Intended Audience Genre (YA, NA, MG, Adult, etc)

50/50 Friday is hosted here on this blog and over at Blue Eye Books.

What is 50/50 Friday?
Everyone has a favorite and then we also have something we dislike. Like a coin, there are two sides to every question. Example: best sequel you've read/worst sequel you've read. So that's what 50/50 Friday is all about. We will have a new topic every Friday. If you have have ideas for this meme don't be scared to let us know!

Topic for the Week
Favorite/Least Favorite Intended Audience Genre (YA, NA, MG, Adult, etc)

Least Favorite
This is an easy one for me. Now, just because I don't like this genre it doesn't mean it's bad or I think less of it. It's just not my cup of tea. Middle Grade was a genre that I only read a little of before jumping into adult and young adult. It just really clicked with me. I think it was because I wanted more romance and kissing, more detailed kissing and romance than what middle grade offered.

Favorite
Take me back two or even maybe a year ago I would've said, Young Adult, it was all I really read but then slowly it became filled with things that I didn't like... and still don't really like at all. So yeah, I'd say adult or new adult now. Hopefully one day, YA will be good again. Saying that, I still find some YA books that I like, not all suck, the genre just isn't what it used to be in my eyes.

Tempting the Dark - ARC Review

His calling…

…might be her destruction

When the door to Daemonia is opened, Savin Thorne is reunited with a childhood friend he thought he’d lost forever. After years of captivity, Jett has escaped—along with hordes of monsters streaming into the mortal realm. With Savin, she has her first experience of desire. But their passion can’t save them. It might even be their undoing…

Expected Publication Date: 9/1/2018

ARC Breakdown

Jett and Savin were best friends 20 years ago... before they were sucked into the demon realm and Savin got out with the help of a new 'friend' and Jett was left there... Savin thinks she died but turns out she found a way to live there, doing whatever she had to do to survive. When he finds her one night, he can't seem to grasp what happened but they slowly grow together but whenever they get close, the demon inside him gets rather angry. Will they ever be together? Can Jett tell him the truth about how she survived?

A quick run and hot read. I will say that everything was so obvious before it ever happened but that didn't lessen my enjoyment. It was cute watching these two best friends come back together after 20 years. Sometimes when it's meant to be, nothing can stop it. I really liked Savin but sometimes felt that Jett was rather a wishy washy character. One moment she hates her demon side and then the next she's at a club just giving into her darker side. She does get better as the book goes along which really redeemed her in my eyes. I loved the romance between the couple and the plot was interesting, I found myself sitting there wondering when the other characters would figure out the answer I knew early on.

Overall, a quick and fun read.

The Iron Flower - ARC Review

Elloren Gardner and her friends were only seeking to right a few wrongs, but their actions have propelled them straight into the ranks of the realm-wide Resistance against Gardnerian encroachment. As the Resistance struggles against the harsh rulings of High Priest Marcus Vogel and the Mage Council, Elloren begins to realize that none of the people she cares about will be safe if Gardneria seizes control of the Western Realm.

With tensions heating up in Verpacia, more and more Gardnerian soldiers continue to descend upon the university…led by none other than Lukas Grey, now commander of the newly rebuilt Fourth Division base. Though Elloren tries to keep him at arm’s length, Lukas is determined to wandfast to her, convinced that she has inherited her grandmother’s magic—the prophesied power of the Black Witch. As his very nearness seems to awaken a darkness inside her, Elloren finds it more and more difficult to believe that she’s truly powerless, as her uncle always claimed.

Caught between her growing feelings for the rebellious Yvan Guriel and the seductive power offered by Lukas Grey, Elloren must find a way to stay true to what she knows is right and protect everyone she loves…even if that means protecting them from herself.

ARC BREAKDOWN

*I was lucky enough for NetGalley and Harlequin Teen to approve me for this ARC in exchange for an honest review*

Holy Jesus! I did not see that twist coming! I still can't even fully process what just happened and I'm so upset that I have so long to read the next one. You can't just leave a girl hanging like that!!!

Okay, let my try and reign myself in here. The Iron Flower, in my opinion, is even better than The Black Witch, it's still very very heavy handed in it's ideals and such but that's the whole point of this series and it's making it's point very well known. The characters are flushed out so well that I honestly feel like they could be real. Even the side characters are well developed.

The first one was more about Ren overcoming what her people had always told her, seeing the other people as just that, people. This one leans more towards the romance (swoon Yven) and her helping the resistance. This book made me cry, laugh, pump my fist into he air, scream, and even at the end, blew my mind.

The writing is fine, detailed wonderfully, the pace is also much better than the first, I don't feel there's any parts that drag. Overall, I can't wait to see what happens to Elloren next because she's got her plate full now.

Book Characters on Tinder!

I've seen this floating around on the web and thought it would be fun to try! I had my partner choose a few different book characters for me. Also let's assume that everyone here is above legal age and its an actual date... not just a hook up. Let's just jump into this!

Something we should just get out of the way now, I'm very picky. VERY picky. That should be known now before we go any further.

1) Harry Potter
Now, I would pass on Harry. He's too hotheaded and often jumps into things before thinking and that's not something I'm into. On a more superficial level, I don't like short guys.

2) Celaena Sardothien
She's awesome, kickass, powerful, giving, protective, and pretty much as awesome as they come. But she's not my type... so pass.

3) Karou
She's stunning, sweet, strong and feminine, funny, and just all around an awesome person. So yes! I'd totally go on a date with Karou.

4) Cameron Hamilton
He's understanding, hot as hell, will be there for you when you're sick, and is just the right about of confident without over doing it and becoming an asshat. So yes! I'd go on date with Cam!

5) Jane Roberts
So I read this so long ago that I don't remember very much about Jane but I do remember how native she was. That's not something I'd be into so I'd pass on her.

6) Zero Kiryu
I don't even have to think about this one. YES!!!

July 2018 Wrap Up!

I read 13 books last month, which is really good for me. July was hard, my partner started a new job where we have to get up super early and then I've been taking lots workshops so I can be a substitute teacher and then my daughter is getting ready to start school, which means we will all be getting colds a lot... needless to say, it's been a very twisted month and I hope August is better.

Now to the reason you even came here, the books! What books did I read this month? Well, let's dive into it.

Considering my lowest rated book was three stars, I'd call this month a win! Have you read any of these books? Let me know below! Have a great day!

The Score (Off-Campus #3)

He knows how to score, on and off the ice

Allie Hayes is in crisis mode. With graduation looming, she still doesn’t have the first clue about what she's going to do after college. To make matters worse, she’s nursing a broken heart thanks to the end of her longtime relationship. Wild rebound sex is definitely not the solution to her problems, but gorgeous hockey star Dean Di Laurentis is impossible to resist. Just once, though, because even if her future is uncertain, it sure as heck won’t include the king of one-night stands.

It’ll take more than flashy moves to win her over

Dean always gets what he wants. Girls, grades, girls, recognition, girls…he’s a ladies man, all right, and he’s yet to meet a woman who’s immune to his charms. Until Allie. For one night, the feisty blonde rocked his entire world—and now she wants to be friends? Nope. It’s not over until he says it’s over. Dean is in full-on pursuit, but when life-rocking changes strike, he starts to wonder if maybe it’s time to stop focusing on scoring…and shoot for love.

Book Breakdown

The Score is so much better than The Mistake!!! I was worried this would follow down the line of the The Mistake but I'm so glad I was wrong. It's still not nearly as good as The Deal but I've come to terms that no one will ever be better than Garrett. No one.

So Allie just broke up with her long time boyfriend and needs to stay away from him so she stays the night at Dean's place after some drinking and drugs they decide to hit the sack together. Now all playboy Dean wants is Allie but Allie doesn't do casual sex but things happen and somehow they end up together but it doesn't last long when something tragic comes along and throws the happy train off its tracks. Will Allie and Dean make it through or will everything just fall apart?

Dean is a fine main lead but he's very boyish and had a pretty damn easy life. It makes him hard to relate to but Allie was pretty cool until the end where she just decides she needs to be alone for a little while, it really felt like drama for the sake of drama and I thought it was very unnecessary. Something else I dislike was the drugs. I hate reading about drugs and it can ruin a book for me in the blink of an eye. If you're like me be aware that Molly and pot are mentioned in this book, not a lot but in the beginning and real close to the end. Just a warning.

Besides those two complaints, I really did love this novel, it had me laughing my butt off more than anything, just too funny. It felt more like a rom-com than the other two in this series but not a bad direction to go in. Dean is a very modern type of guy, so if that's your thing, you'll love him to pieces.

Music Monday - Adrian von Ziegler

This weekly meme is hosted over at Always Me.

These songs are just instrumental but they are great for setting the mood when I need to relax or get ready to go anything 'witchy'. So I thought I'd share some of my favorites today.
