Thursday's Discussion - Rating a Book You've Never Read

So, I've seen this a lot in the past few weeks and I got to think this would be a great discussion!

Now, I want to say that I personally do not think it's right to rate a book you've never read. I mean if you've never read a book, you have no opinion on it. I mean, I'm sorry but reading a review from someone else doesn't count. You've still not read the book. Even if you've read lots of quotes... still not the whole book. You have no opinion on this book but the one you adopted from someone else.

I mean we are all free to do as we please, and it's not like you're out murdering someone by rating a book you've never read or anything. Do as you want.

It just feels dishonest to me. By rating a book, it makes it look like you read it and you're giving your thoughts and views on this book. If you've not read it... see where I'm going with this?

Anyway, that's my thoughts on this topic. Let me know yours below! Have a great day little butterflies and as always: Happy Reading!

  1. I don’t look at ratings when I’m choosing books to read, so the ratings don’t impact me. I’d never rate a book I haven’t read, though. It seems dishonest.

    1. I only look at rating when it's a book I've heard nothing about lol

  2. I never do ratings for books that I haven't read. I agree that it feels dishonest.

  3. It's unimaginable to me to rate a book I've never read... Something, I'd never think of doing. I kind of find it odd to think that people/readers out there would actually do this... But then again, I've heard about people wanting to ban books they've never read, so go figure.

In the past, I've stopped reading plenty of books I'd started that were to my liking, but I never rated them as I'd never finished reading them.

    1. Yes! It's crazy to think people do this. Also banning books, that's a whole her topic I plan to drive into.

  4. Oh I agree! You can't say a book is 5 stars if you've never read it. Even if it's from your autobuy author. You didn't read it, you can't (in a sense) rate it! Makes no sense to me why people do this. It's like seeing all these stars on goodreads for a book that's not even out yet. Granted maybe some of these stars are coming from ARC readers, but even then...unless you're posting your review then and there, don't rate it! Even when I go on Goodreads to say I've read (an ARC) of a book that's not out yet, I just say I've read it. Review to be posted on said date. I won't even mark my star ratings until I've posted the review in full. It baffles me to think that people would say a book is worth 4/5 stars if they've never read it. Because yeah, saying something is 5/5 might be common because fans love the author so much, but you know someone thinks otherwise because why else is the Goodreads rating at a 4.5?

    1. Yes! Like A Court of Wings and Ruin. People have already rated that 5 stars and I'm like.... wtf? You've not read it yet guys. I'm sure I'll love it as I loved the other two but I've not went ahead and rated it. I got to read it first!

  5. I've never understood why you would rate a book you've never read...

  6. I don't think it's right to rate a book one hasn't even attempted reading. If it's a DNF and you gave it a sincere chance, then yes, I'm fine with rating it but besides that.....yeah I don't think it's right.

    1. I can totally get behind that logic! If you've attempted to read it and didn't like it, rate away. You gave it a shot and didn't like it. Makes sense.

  7. I just don't understand why people rate books they don't read. It's like looking at those Amazon reviews where people rate the product one star because they never got it in the mail. So maybe the mail service is terrible but that's not necessarily a reflection of the product itself!

  8. This is a common pet-peeve, but I guess there will always be people who do it. It seems crazy to give a book a rating without reading it, I definitely agree.
